H.P. Lovecraft

Trying my hand at caricature (definitely one of my weak points) with one of my favorite authors, H.P. Lovecraft.

Lovecraft is an interesting subject, both to draw and to study.
On the one hand, it’s difficult to overestimate his influence on modern horror. So many writers, directors, and creators owe a huge debt, overtly or not, to the imagination of Lovecraft. He was a visionary author that created some of the most vivid and enduring concepts of horror in modern fiction.

On the other hand, even for his time, he was a man of despicable views and prejudices, and it makes his writing very difficult to take in a modern context.

Still, he remains a favorite author of mine, and I can’t deny how much of my own creative efforts are in his debt.

I don’t think I’ve quite got the likeness down here, I’m going to keep trying.

Spot Illustrations and Character Designs for Megaton Magazine

Remember a couple days ago when I said I’d have a special update? Here it is!

I got the OK to post these on my blog, since the magazine has gone to print and is on sale in the UK. I was recently given the opportunity to design characters and create finished illustrations for a British video game magazine geared towards younger readers called Megaton. This is my first real paid freelance assignment, and I’m very excited about it. The client was very happy with the finished illustrations, and I’m hoping for more work in the future. Sorry for the lack of updates this month. I’ve actually been busy! I’ll get back to updating regularly soon, and I’ll have a nice, special update in the next couple of days.

Conan O’Brian (You may have heard of him?) has put out an open call for submissions of drawings of “The Flaming C”, the hilarious superhero alter-ego Bruce Timm designed for him.
